Lineage Societies

Taxonomy Code: PS-8200.4500

Formal, organized groups of people who trace their ancestry from a common ancestor. Many of these societies have expanded the concept to encompass descent from a group of people, such as those aboard a particular ship, those who served in a particular war, or those engaged in any of a wide range of activities. The societies include individuals descended from the first settlers in a particular state or region, early founders of religious groups, veterans of wars and military campaigns, descendants of an ethnic group, descendants of a common progenitor and descendants from royalty or important historical figures. Examples of lineage societies include Daughters of the American Revolution, First Families of Virginia and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
