Federal External Affairs ESF

Federal government departments and agencies that have primary responsibility for or a support role in ensuring that sufficient federal assets are deployed to the field during a potential or actual incident of national significance (ESF #15). They are also responsible for providing accurate, coordinated and timely information to affected audiences including government entities, the media, the private sector and the local populace. Functional components include public affairs, community relations, congressional affairs, international affairs, state and local coordination and tribal affairs. Activities include activation and operation, in coordination with state authorities, of the emergency alert system (EAS) which enables authorities to deliver emergency messages and instructions in audio format; providing mobile telecommunications, operational support, life support and power generation assets for the on-site management of all-hazard activities; and working with local broadcasters to set up the Recovery Radio Network which enables stations to reach a series of recorded messages that provide the latest up-to-the minute reports on the federal government's response and recovery operations by dialing a toll free number. Stations may choose to record these briefs for use in their newscasts.
