Examples of biomedical engineering and its subdiscipline, rehabilitation engineering, include the design and manufacture of cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial limbs and joints, prosthetic blood vessels, hearing aids and other similar assistive technology devices; computer systems to monitor patients during surgery or intensive care; advanced imaging systems; computer-assisted diagnostic tools; and laser tools for use in surgery.
